Yakabuski: The Liberals’ immigration blueprint is unsound, and will hinder the economy it seeks to help

Good, long and informative read on the fallacies of the government’s immigration policies and programs. Good quotes by Mikal Skuterud, Pierre Fortin and yours truly:

On the afternoon of June 16, Canada’s population surpassed the 40-million mark.

In a country long lamented by some of its leading thinkers as a low-density also-ran stunted by a lack of bodies to fill its vast expanses and dynamize its sleepy cities, it was to be expected that hitting this milestone would be considered a big deal by some.

  1. Graham Churchill's avatar Graham Churchill says:

Canada is near the bottom of the OECD in terms of productivity. The argument is made that our companies are failing to invest capital and are choosing cheap labour instead. Does our failure to invest capital have anything to do with the fact we spend so much on real estate?

For instance, if a bank only has so much money, have they been prioritizing lending for real estate over capital investments that might improve productivity? I have entrepreneurs tell me that Canadian banks are notorious for refusing to lend for business ventures and would prefer to lend for mortgages. Businesses invariably have to go outside Canada to get business loans.
