Chris Selley: Resisting multiculturalism, one packed lunch at a time | National Post

Yet another eruption over what should be a non-issue – bringing halal or kosher food to an amusement park. And fairness does not have to mean identical treatment.

ATIP Documents – Batch 2 – Delayed

Now formally overdue as of 22 July.

But with a perverse sense of humour – sending me the English and French 2010 Discover Canada citizenship study guide, a public document. Waste of postage.

Meanwhile we wait some substantive documents.

Will Canada’s lead multiculturalism minister please stand up? – Inside Politics

Good post by Kady O’Malley who is the real Minister of Multiculturalism, Chris Alexander, who has the departmental role, Jason Kenney who has the political outreach role, or Tim Uppal, the Minister of State for Multiculturalism? No brainer, political outreach role trumps.

The Queen and I find middle ground – The Globe and Mail

Nice piece by Ratna Omidvar on how one’s background influences one’s perception of the Monarchy and the citizenship oath. Warm embrace of our British heritage, despite the difficult elements of British Colonial history for some groups.

Despite the efforts of Discover Canada and related publications to explain the role of the Crown in the Canadian system, discussion tends to revolve around the question what should the wording of the Canadian citizenship oath be within context of our current system of government.

Citizenship and the Prophet principle – FT.com

An interesting summary of a collection of essays on citizenship and sharia, largely written from the perspective that it is preferable not to go down the road of separate religious tribunals, and ending up on the need for greater engagement by Muslim men and women with mainstream life, rather than the more esoteric debates over English law and sharia.

B.C. woman gets day in court in fight to be recognized as Canadian – The Globe and Mail

Another of the ‘Lost Canadians,’ Jackie Scott, those who married non-Canadians before the Canadian citizenship act came into being in 1947. Like all such cases, the details can be a bit messy, given the nature of how some people’s lives don’t neatly fit the requirements, and the number who split their life between Canada and other countries.

Will be interesting to see how the courts rule.
